4 Signs of a Faulty Gas Furnace Ignitor

4 Signs of a Faulty Gas Furnace Ignitor

With winters as harsh as the Twin Cities, a reliable heating system differentiates between quality comfort year-round and inconsistent air quality. A gas furnace has what it takes to get the job done when it comes to heating systems. However, like most things, it will fail to work from time to time.

Having your gas furnace ignitor not only makes your house chilly but also proves to be a hazard in your home. Let’s discuss four signs of a faulty gas furnace ignitor.

1. Temperate Air From The Vents

One of the most tell-tale signs your heating system isn’t working probably comes from your vents.

When your HVAC system kicks on, put your hand over one of the vents. If the vent is pushing out lukewarm air or air that matches the current temperature in your room, it might be an indicator of a faulty furnace ignitor.

2. Furnace Shutting Off

You can tell when the furnace kicks on in your home by the sound it makes. The slight click tells you your furnace is turning on, ready to blow warm air out of the vents.

If you hear the furnace shut off immediately, it indicates the ignitor is suffering from some issues. The furnace clicks off as a safety precaution, negating possible gas leaks.

3. Furnace Ignitor Fails to Glow

Depending on how old your heating system is, you will have an actual pilot light that ignites the heat for your home. More modern heating systems have an electronic ignition.

Whichever kind you have for your home, you will be able to see a glowing light coming from the heart of the furnace. If you notice no light coming from the source, it is a sure sign of a faulty ignitor.

4. Dirty Furnace Components

Consistent general cleaning and maintenance are recommended for just about anything in your home. If you have not cleaned the component of your furnace in a while, the ignitor may be faulty because of it. You may have a dirty filter, making it harder for your HVAC systems to push out air.

On the other hand, your ignitor itself may be dirty. So, if your ignitor fails to control a flame, the first thing you should try is general cleaning of it!
